I sprained my ankle two weeks ago and have been using ice and wrapping it with an ACE bandage. When can I start using heat instead of ice?
For most injuries, ice is recommended during the first 24 to 48 hours to help manage pain and reduce swelling, which is part of the inflammatory phase of healing.
You can consider switching to heat once the swelling has subsided and the area is no longer red or warm to the touch. At this point, if ice no longer seems to improve symptoms, heat can be introduced to promote healing.
When using heat, apply it for 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the type of heat source you use. Be cautious with heating pads; avoid falling asleep with the pad on, as this can lead to skin burns, increased tissue swelling, and potentially delay healing.
