Common Athletic Ankle Injuries

I’m 17, very athletic, and have made it through high school without injury. I know girls are more likely to tear their ACLs. Are there other injuries I should be concerned about?

Yes, ankle sprains are another injury to watch out for. According to a recent study from the University of Vermont, female high school and college athletes are more prone to ankle sprains compared to males participating in the same sports.

The study looked at sports like soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey. It found that first-time ankle sprains occurred roughly once every 1,000 days of play (including both practice and games).

Researchers are working to pinpoint the risk factors that make athletes more vulnerable to these injuries in hopes of developing preventative measures. However, more research is needed before specific guidelines can be provided.
