Why Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Is More Than Just Kegels
Why Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Is More Than Just Kegels — And When Kegels Might Do More Harm Than Good
Most people associate pelvic floor physiotherapy with Kegels. While Kegels have their place, they are far from a one-size-fits-all solution — and in some cases, they can even make things worse. At Wellspring Health and Wellness in Hamilton and Stoney Creek, our pelvic floor therapists offer a personalized approach that goes well beyond Kegels.
What Exactly Are Kegels?
Kegels are exercises that involve contracting and relaxing the pelvic floor muscles. They’re often recommended for issues like urinary incontinence or postpartum recovery — but they’re not always the answer.
When Kegels Might Do More Harm Than Good
- When the pelvic floor is too tight (hypertonic pelvic floor)
- If you have pelvic pain, painful intercourse, or chronic constipation
- In cases of pelvic organ prolapse without proper evaluation
In these cases, doing Kegels can worsen the symptoms and delay healing. That’s why a tailored assessment is crucial.
What We Do Instead at Wellspring

- Detailed internal and/or external assessments (based on your comfort)
