WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO REDUCE SWELLING OF A SPRAINED ANKLE?

I sprained my ankle over the weekend and ended up in the emergency room. The nurses and doctors focused on reducing the swelling. Why is managing swelling so crucial?

Swelling can be a significant obstacle to healing. The primary goal of early treatment for a sprain or injury is to control the inflammation and associated swelling. Reducing swelling can help alleviate pain and may improve joint function.

While some research suggests there might not be a direct link between swelling and immediate ankle function, limiting swelling could still offer long-term benefits. Less swelling may reduce joint damage and help nearby muscles return to normal function more quickly.
