TENNIS AFTER TOTAL ANKLE REPLACEMENT (TAR)

I had a total ankle replacement six months ago and am eager to return to tennis. What guidelines should I follow?

Consult your orthopedic surgeon for personalized advice based on your implant type and surgery. General guidelines suggest:

  • Increased activity might accelerate wear of the polyethylene components, leading to potential loosening.
  • Completing a full physiotherapy rehab program is essential before resuming sports.
  • X-rays should confirm healthy bone stock and no implant loosening.
  • Your orthopedic surgeon must approve your activity level and type of sport, and a support brace may be needed.
  • Avoid high-impact and quick-stop activities.
  • Report any pain or discomfort to your surgeon promptly.
