After having a cast on my ankle for a fracture, I’m now experiencing stiffness and slow progress in regaining motion. Why is it taking so long?
Two main factors contribute to prolonged stiffness post-cast. Firstly, the joint itself may have undergone changes during injury and healing, leading to slower recovery. Additionally, immobilization can cause muscles and tendons to shorten and cartilage to become less flexible.
Exercise is generally the most effective remedy for this issue. Research indicates that stretching exercises are not necessarily superior to non-stretching exercises. Allow yourself four to six weeks to regain full motion and consult your doctor if you have concerns.
