Recurrent Ankle Sprains

I sprained my ankle badly last year, and now I keep twisting it unexpectedly. Why is this happening, and how can I stop it?

It’s common for people who’ve had an ankle sprain to experience recurring issues, where the ankle gives out or twists without warning. This is known as recurrent ankle sprain. The problem often stems from damage to the small sensors in the joints, muscles, and ligaments of the ankle during the initial injury. These sensors help your body sense joint position, and when they’re impaired, your ankle becomes more vulnerable to additional sprains.

One proven method for treating and preventing ankle sprains is disk training. This involves using a circular platform with a small sphere underneath that allows you to tilt your foot in various directions, helping to strengthen and stabilize the ankle.

Doctors and physical therapists have found this type of exercise highly effective. Patients who incorporate disk training into their recovery often experience better balance, reduced ankle pain, and improved mobility. By enhancing the responsiveness of the muscles that support the ankle, disk training is an excellent strategy for preventing future sprains.
