Preventing Ankle Sprains Caused by Snowboarding

As a snowboarder who has experienced a few painful ankle sprains, should you be concerned?

Yes, it’s important to address the issue. What might seem like multiple sprains could actually be a fracture in the main ankle bone, known as the talus. This type of injury often involves a small bump on the outside of the talus and is common among snowboarders. Unfortunately, these fractures can be difficult to detect with standard X-rays.

To accurately diagnose an ankle fracture, doctors may need to perform an X-ray at a specific angle or use a CAT scan. The CAT scan provides detailed images, resembling “slices” of the bone, which help in identifying subtle fractures.

If left untreated, an ankle fracture can lead to more severe complications, including persistent pain, arthritis, and limitations in your ability to participate in sports. Once your doctor confirms the diagnosis, they can recommend appropriate treatment options. Whether it involves a cast or surgery, addressing the issue promptly will improve your long-term recovery and overall ankle health.
