HOW LONG AFTER A SPRAIN BEFORE I CAN JUMP?

After spraining my ankle, I’ve noticed that I can step down from stairs or curbs, but I still can’t jump across puddles or obstacles. How long does it take to regain that ability?

Recovering from an acute ankle injury typically takes about four to six weeks. During this time, pain and swelling should subside, and you’ll be able to bear full weight on the injured leg.

However, with moderate to severe ankle sprains, torn ligaments are often involved. Unlike muscles, ligaments don’t heal the same way. When a ligament is torn, scar tissue forms in its place, and the ligament loses its elastic quality. This can lead to changes in proprioception, which is the joint’s ability to sense movement and position in space.

When proprioception is impaired, it can result in ankle instability, making it difficult to change positions and maintain balance. This is likely why you’re still struggling with more dynamic movements like jumping. Often, this skill won’t return on its own and may require a targeted rehabilitation program to “reset” your joint’s proprioception.

A physiotherapist can assess your ankle and determine if rehab is necessary. They can also guide you through exercises that will help restore your ankle’s function. With consistent practice, your ability to jump and perform other dynamic movements should return within several weeks to a few months.
