I’m a gymnast preparing for an important regional competition, but about two weeks ago, I sprained my ankle. My coach insists I tape it during the event, but I’m concerned it might limit my performance. What should I do?
Ankle sprains are one of the most frequent injuries athletes face, and unfortunately, around 75% of those who sprain their ankle once end up reinjuring it. Repeated ankle sprains can lead to chronic instability, which can hinder your ability to perform as a gymnast.
You might want to consider some form of ankle support. If taping feels too restrictive, you could opt for an elastic wrap or a neoprene sleeve that fits snugly around the foot and ankle. A recent study comparing various taping methods found that taping doesn’t negatively affect function or performance.
While taping won’t enhance your performance, it can provide a sense of stability and confidence, which is critical during competition. More importantly, it may help prevent further injury—a key concern as you head into such an important event.
