Ankle Sprain: Swelling and Function

Q: How is swelling related to ankle function after a sprain?

A: Surprisingly, a recent study found that swelling isn’t closely related to ankle function. In this study, 29 patients with fresh ankle sprains were assessed, and the researchers discovered that the degree of swelling didn’t correlate with the patients’ ability to participate in sports or daily activities. Additionally, swelling didn’t seem to affect whether patients could bear weight on their injured ankles.

The researchers concluded that the best way to gauge ankle function is through patients’ own reports of their abilities. This makes sense, considering the many individual factors that influence how people recover from injuries.
